2-nonenal has a greasy, waxy, faintly grassy odor that differs chemically from ordinary sweat odor. 2-nonenal forms when fatty acids on aging skin oxidize. Conventional washing does not resolve 2-nonenal odor because the compound remains in fabric fibers and is released by body heat. After menopause, reduced sebum production and antioxidant capacity make palmitoleic acid more likely to oxidize into 2-nonenal.
