The protocol was approved by three ethics bodies: the Aboriginal Health Research Ethics Committee, the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network, and Flinders University Human Research Ethics Committee. Research data belongs to participants themselves, and the study team will work with Ngarrindjeri Elders to achieve data repatriation at pilot completion. Research was conducted in accordance with NHMRC and AIATSIS guidelines for ethical research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Aboriginal governance is central to the study, with an Aboriginal project manager and Aboriginal coordinating principal investigator supported by seven Aboriginal investigators.
