Acute GIB management is less algorithmically defined than advanced cardiac life support. GIB is managed by many medical and surgical subspecialties, requiring physician competence in both technical and non-technical aspects of care. Bedside management of GIB may require interpretation of vital signs, medication and transfusion decisions, resuscitation tactics, advanced clinical reasoning, teamwork, and communication. Gastrointestinal bleeding is a common cause of hospitalisation and can lead to life-threatening in-hospital decompensation. GIB is considered a useful proxy for examining simulation-based training in complex acute care because it is common and often requires high-order clinical reasoning.
