Adrenal Suppression

Chronic corticosteroid use causes the adrenal glands to downregulate or shut down their own cortisol production. When chronic corticosteroid use is stopped, the adrenal glands cannot resume normal cortisol output quickly enough, creating a dangerous deficit. Withdrawal from chronic corticosteroid use can cause osteoporosis, ulcers, diabetes, weight gain, cataracts, and skin problems.
