Mortality in this cohort was higher than in major international comparator studies. In-hospital mortality differed significantly across 48-hour chloride groups. All-cause in-hospital mortality was the primary outcome of the study. The study concludes that it identifies associations with mortality but cannot prove causation. The study attributes elevated mortality partly to referral-only selection, limited airway management during transfers, and LMIC health-system differences. The study used binary logistic regression models to evaluate predictors of in-hospital mortality. The overall all-cause in-hospital mortality rate in the included cohort was 11.4%.
