Intravenous iron therapy reduced transfusion rates in prior work but was not routinely available in the study hospitals. Existing evidence suggests health education can improve awareness and practices. Existing evidence suggests iron supplementation and micronutrient fortification can rapidly improve iron stores and haemoglobin levels. Economic analyses from Canada and Germany frame preoperative anaemia correction as a high-value health system intervention. Eligible comparators include standard care, no intervention, placebo, or alternative anaemia interventions. The study identifies preoperative anaemia as an independent and modifiable risk factor in elderly surgical patients. The review will examine interventions including supplementation, dietary modification, fortification, deworming, education, behaviour change communication, iron sucrose, transfusion, government programmes, and community-based management.
