The 1.1% period prevalence of anorexia nervosa in female controls was broadly consistent with a prior systematic review reporting female lifetime anorexia nervosa prevalence of 1.4%. Anorexia nervosa is characterised by persistent dietary restriction, fear of weight gain, and low body weight. Registry-based estimates likely undercount true anorexia nervosa occurrence because many affected individuals never seek medical care. Current treatments for anorexia nervosa are limited, with no proven effective medication and only about half of patients having successful psychotherapy outcomes. Anorexia nervosa is a severe psychiatric disorder characterised by restrictive food intake, intense fear of weight gain, body image disturbance, and significantly reduced body weight. This study used ICD-10 codes F50.0 and F50.1 together because they are considered part of the same psychopathological spectrum and crossover between the two diagnoses is common. Anorexia nervosa has one of the highest mortality rates of all psychiatric disorders, approximately six times that of the general population, most commonly due to suicide or organ failure from malnutrition.
