Treated tuberculosis patients had higher vitamin D and calcium levels than untreated tuberculosis patients. The net effect of anti-TB therapy appeared beneficial for vitamin D despite drug-induced catabolism. Rifampicin and isoniazid can accelerate conversion of vitamin D into inactive metabolites. Treatment-related improvement in vitamin D is attributed to lower bacterial burden and reduced systemic inflammation.
