Patients with APACHE II score 10–19 had a 10.695 times higher likelihood of entering the rapid recovery group compared to the high-risk group. The relationship between disease severity and speed of swallowing recovery remains debated because trauma patients may have additional pathological contributors such as cervical spine injury. Prior research found that each unit increase in APACHE II score was associated with a 0.324-fold higher probability of post-extubation swallowing dysfunction.
