Regulatory agencies EPA and OMRI classify Apeel as a post-harvest fungicide, while the manufacturer markets it as a coating. The vast majority of Apeel's product composition is listed only as 'other ingredients' with no further specification, preventing independent safety evaluation. Apeel cannot be removed from produce using conventional washing methods. Pesticides applied to produce before the Apeel coating is applied are sealed beneath it and cannot be removed by consumer washing. Removing the peel to avoid the Apeel coating sacrifices most of the surface-level nutrients, since the highest nutrient concentration is in or just beneath the skin. Apeel Sciences, backed by Bill Gates, produces an edible coating applied to fruits and vegetables to extend shelf life.
