Appendix

The appendix is located just below the ileocecal valve junction in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. The appendix releases two substances that support colon function. The appendix is not a vestigial organ but rather a reservoir of beneficial bacteria and immune factors. The appendix releases stored microbiota to repopulate the gut after diarrhea caused by food poisoning or infection. The appendix has an active digestive function rather than being purposeless. The appendix functions as the colon's oil can in the digestive system.
