Asynchronous Communication Technologies

Asynchronous tools can support care continuity and coordination by allowing communication outside scheduled appointments and creating digital documentation of concerns and care plans. The absence of electronic document routing after virtual visits caused patients to travel to clinics to collect requisitions or results, shifting administrative burden onto them. Asynchronous virtual care tools such as secure messaging, patient portals, electronic document transfer, and photo sharing were underused. Patients wanted to share photographs of rashes, incisions, wounds, and documents from other providers before and after appointments. Photo sharing enabled one patient to coordinate wound care with a wound nurse and avoid an emergency department visit.
