ATP Metabolism

The creatine phosphate buffer is a rapid-buffering mechanism rather than a conventional energy generation system. ATP is the brain's immediate energy currency and is consumed every time a neuron fires. Creatine phosphate regenerates usable ATP by donating a phosphate group to ADP before the recycling cycle can collapse. The brain continuously regenerates ATP in a tightly balanced loop to keep neurons firing reliably.
