Humans lack a penis bone, whereas many other primates, as well as rodents, insectivores, and carnivores, possess one. Humans are an exception among many related mammals in lacking a penis bone. The reason penis bones exist is not fully understood; hypotheses include maintaining mating position or enabling instant erection, but none has settled the question.
