Barrigel creates separation between the prostate and anterior rectal wall to protect rectal tissue from exit dose. At least 3 mL of Barrigel is inserted, with a goal of at least 1 cm separation from prostate base to apex. Multiple studies have reported dosimetric and clinical benefits of rectal spacer gel, but randomized data are limited. The gel gradually resorbs over 1-3 years. Rectal spacer gel is injected between the prostate and anterior rectal wall to increase separation and reduce rectal radiation dose.
