Behavioural activation is used as the active comparator because it is an evidence-based psychotherapy for depression. Behavioural activation identifies and reduces avoidance while increasing reinforcing activity. Behavioural activation conceptualises depression as maintained by insufficient environmental reinforcement and negatively reinforced avoidance. In the early BA phase, baseline activities, avoidance behaviour, life goals, and values are assessed to create an individual disease model and goals. Continuation group therapy in the BA arm mainly focuses on self-activation and troubleshooting.
