Biosecurity and Governance

Current regulatory systems are inadequate because synthetic biology is becoming faster, more powerful, and more accessible. Synthetic biology needs stronger firewalls between engineered systems and the natural world. Current safeguards may be insufficient as DNA synthesis becomes more distributed. Desktop DNA synthesis could weaken centralized screening by allowing biological programs to be printed locally. Synthetic biology may become dangerous because powerful biological tools could become accessible to individuals and small groups.
