Birthing Positions

Most women still give birth in a supine position despite discussion of upright positions and maternal mobility. Evidence remains inconclusive about whether specific birthing positions have advantages over others. The supine position remains acceptable when it reflects the woman's preference. Upright birthing positions include sitting, squatting, standing, and hands-and-knees positions. Guidelines recommend comfortable positions while generally advising avoidance of the supine position during the second stage of labour.
