A strength of the study was direct measurement of brain penetrability for each CCB, rather than relying on previously published penetrance classifications measured with inconsistent methods. The study conclusion does not exclude the possibility that CCB formulations or doses specifically designed to target the brain could still have neuropsychiatric effects. Brain penetrability was quantified using Kp,uu,brain, derived from animal studies measuring free drug concentrations in rat plasma and brain tissue after intravenous dosing.
