A second known HIV-positive patient entered remission after a blood stem cell transplant for Hodgkin's lymphoma from a donor with HIV-resistant stem cells. CCR5 was the key genetic target in the described HIV remission stem cell transplant cases. Donor T cells lacking functional CCR5 could not make the protein HIV commonly uses to enter cells. Altering CCR5 is presented as ethically and biologically complicated because it may affect more than HIV susceptibility.
