Cherokee cave writings from Manitou Cave contained religious messages and ritual references from before roughly the 1830s. The article says some backward cave writing may have been intended for beings in the spirit world. The inscriptions used charcoal and the Cherokee syllabary, which has 85 syllabic symbols.
