Social influence from visible smoking may normalize tobacco use in everyday life. Cigarette smoke contains 7,000 chemicals, of which 250 are classified as harmful and 69 are carcinogenic. Adolescent tobacco use was consistently higher among adolescents exposed to secondhand smoke in public places. Secondhand smoke exposure at home remained a consistent adjusted predictor across survey waves. Secondhand and thirdhand smoke also deliver meaningful toxic loads beyond active smoking. Radon gas is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate in homes and directly damage lung tissue.
