CME produces superior surgical specimens compared with standard colectomy across pathological metrics. Hohenberger's original CME series linked specimen improvements to lower local recurrence and higher cancer-related survival. Open and laparoscopic approaches are both considered valid for CME, with laparoscopic CME offering faster recovery markers in meta-analysis. Retrospective series, registry analyses, and meta-analyses associate higher lymph node yield with improved survival, especially for right-sided lesions. RELARC found higher vascular injury in CME than in standard surgery even at experienced centres.
