Polyps are small, benign tumors that grow inside the colon. A colon polyp is an abnormal tissue growth that grows on a small stalk protruding from the lining of the colon. Certain types of colon polyps carry a significantly higher risk of progressing to colon cancer. Chronic colon inflammation alone can stimulate tumor growth, directly increasing polyp risk. 80% of polyps carry only a 0–2% risk of becoming cancerous. The presence of polyps warrants monitoring but is not cause for alarm by itself.
