Five-year overall survival is approximately 12% in unresectable CRLM compared with 41% among surgically treated patients. Fewer than 25% of patients with CRLM are considered resectable at diagnosis. Liver metastasis occurs in more than half of patients with colorectal cancer and is the leading cause of death from the disease. Common reasons for CRLM unresectability include insufficient future liver remnant, bilobar disease, and tumour proximity to vital structures. Liver resection remains the only curative treatment for colorectal cancer liver metastases.
