White-collar workers served as the reference category in the regression models. The final analytic cohorts included about 291,000 workers for both hip and knee analyses. The study included male construction workers examined from 1971 to 1993. The cohort came from the Swedish Construction Workers Cohort and was based on occupational health surveillance from the late 1960s through 1993. Women were excluded because they were a small share of the cohort and were mainly in white-collar roles or lacked job-title data.
