The review analysed seven healthcare cost categories and also included combined total costs in eight studies. Emergency costs showed the most consistent negative association with health literacy. Evidence for inpatient costs was mostly negative but more heterogeneous than emergency costs. Some outpatient and vaccination findings were positive because higher health literacy was linked to planned or preventive care spending.
