A small minority of participants reported complete unawareness of potential COVID-19 vaccine side effects. Awareness of side effects was associated with hesitancy specifically when media coverage emphasised rare or severe outcomes rather than the common and self-limiting nature of most reactions. Most participants were aware of common COVID-19 vaccine side effects including fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, and injection-site reactions. Concern about long-term side effects was a key demotivator for COVID-19 vaccination.
