Crisis Communication with Children

Young children especially need to feel that adults are present, handling the frightening situation, and that they are being protected. When explaining a crisis such as coronavirus to a young child, the most important message is reassurance grounded in love and commitment. Explanations of crisis for young children should be truthful without being overwhelming. Children can be reassured that the family will control what it can, which avoids false promises while still giving a sense of safety. Children can be told that their parent is committed to making the world as safe as possible for the child, family, and surrounding community.
