In Massachusetts, the average CT value across newly diagnosed COVID-positive patients was approximately 36–37, suggesting most had already passed their peak infectious period. A PCR cycle threshold (CT) value indicates viral load: low CT means high viral load detected quickly; high CT means low viral load requiring many amplification cycles. CT values are currently not legally reportable to patients in any standardized way. Reporting CT values to contact tracers would allow them to prioritize actively rising-load cases and deprioritize stale cases where the infectious window has already passed.
