Using DDS-17 was considered a study strength because it specifically measures diabetes-related emotional distress and is widely used. Diabetes distress was measured using the validated Diabetes Distress Scale-17. The DDS-17 measures four domains: emotional burden, physician-related distress, regimen-related distress and interpersonal distress. DDS-17 items are scored on a 6-point Likert scale from not a problem to a very serious problem.
