Delegation

Replaceability is framed as a feature of resilient work design rather than a threat. Recursive agents adapted their delegation depth to task structure across benchmarks. Delegation was more frequent in the easiest scenario than in more complex scenarios. Delegation by team members other than the senior physician increased as disruptive events became more prominent. Concurrency varied by domain, with TEXTCRAFT-SYNTH using concurrent delegation much more often than DEEPDIVE. Delegation includes assigning work to people, technology, checklists, processes, calendar events, subscriptions, contractors, or roles. Prior recursive and multi-agent systems generally did not train models to decide when and how to delegate. RAO exposes recursion through an asynchronous launch_subagent function that starts a fresh instance of the same policy. Parents can call subagents either sequentially or concurrently. Delegation challenges whether a task truly needs to remain with the original person. The study suggests expected technical tasks followed a top-down pattern, while disruptive events produced more distributed leadership.
