Attempting to clear the nose when dental anesthesia has impaired muscle control will not improve airflow because the obstruction is not from mucus. After dental anesthesia, only the nostril on the anesthetized side closes during sniffing, making breathing through that nostril difficult. Dental anesthesia can cause a temporary collapse of one nasal passage by impairing nerve and muscle function on one side of the face.
