Patients who avoided sweets or fast food had lower treatment costs than those who did not. Insulin users had higher treatment costs than non-users. Treatment costs included physician visits, investigations, inpatient and outpatient care, insulin, oral antidiabetic drugs, and other ambulatory services. The primary outcome was patient-reported diabetes-related treatment cost. Participants were instructed to report only costs directly attributable to diabetes management.
