A little over half of participants had good knowledge of diabetic retinopathy. Knowledge of diabetic retinopathy is described as a modifiable mediator of annual screening behaviour. The independent predictors of adherence share a pathway involving insufficient awareness of silent diabetic retinopathy progression. Educated patients are presented as better able to understand the need for surveillance of asymptomatic disease.
