Slightly less than half of the cohort had pericardial disease recorded as the primary diagnosis. Primary and secondary pericardial disease groups were demographically and clinically distinct. Secondary pericardial disease rose sharply with older age and had a more balanced sex distribution. Primary pericardial disease occurred at a roughly constant rate across adult age groups and predominantly affected men. Secondary pericardial disease patients were more likely to present with pericardial effusion.
