Anthropometric indices and CAN score did not consistently classify the same newborns as malnourished. Some appropriate- and large-for-gestational-age newborns were clinically malnourished despite normal or high birth size. The CAN score found fetal malnutrition in newborns with normal BMI, so normal BMI did not rule out fetal malnutrition. The MAC/HC ratio showed substantial disagreement with CAN score classification.
