People vary in dietary cholesterol response, with many hyporesponders and a smaller hyperresponder group. Most people experience little or only modest blood cholesterol change from cholesterol-rich foods. The article rejects the simple claim that eggs cause heart disease through dietary cholesterol alone. The American Heart Association recommended a 300 milligram daily dietary cholesterol ceiling for decades. The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee removed the 300 milligram cholesterol cap in 2015 after reviewing decades of research. Blood cholesterol is not a simple direct reflection of dietary cholesterol intake. The liver can reduce cholesterol synthesis when dietary cholesterol intake rises and can synthesize more when intake falls. The article argues that dietary cholesterol does not simply accumulate because the liver adjusts its own cholesterol production. Egg intake recommendations of three to four eggs daily should account for cardiovascular history and lipid response.
