Divergent Boundaries

Divergent boundaries occur where plates move apart and Earth opens along a crack. At divergent boundaries, molten material rises into the opening from inside Earth. New crust cools and solidifies after molten rock rises, then moves away as plates continue separating. New oceanic crust forms at mid-ocean ridges where plates diverge.
