Partners' perceived entitlement to unrestricted sexual access is identified as an underlying driver of menstruation-related violence. Discovery of contraceptive use was associated with physical, sexual, and psychological intimate partner violence in participants' accounts. Violence after discovery included physical violence, demands to remove contraception, threats of abandonment, accusations of infidelity, and financial withdrawal. Menstrual bleeding itself may function as an independent risk factor for IPV. Alcohol availability is associated with higher rates of domestic violence.
