Close contacts who test anti-EBOV IgG-positive at enrolment are reclassified as Ebola virus disease survivors for analysis. Ebola virus disease survivors can experience postacute sequelae, including serious eye disease. Other documented postacute sequelae in Ebola virus disease survivors include joint disease, mental health disorders, and viral persistence in the central nervous system and reproductive organs. In the SMILE study, Ebola virus disease survivors are identified through Ministry of Health databases using EBOV IgG or original RT-qPCR results.
