Renewable electricity can reduce sterilisation impact because sterilisation is driven mainly by energy use. Changing from the Danish electricity grid to less renewable grids increased the total carbon footprint substantially. Operating theatre energy use was estimated from hospital-wide energy data because theatre-specific data were unavailable. In countries with less renewable electricity, sterilisation and operating theatre energy use would account for a larger share of total impact.
