For bipolar disorder, whitening strengthened correlations with cortical rankings and moved several subcortical regions closer to literature-based findings. Across both diagnoses, whitening made ROI importance more biologically plausible relative to ENIGMA-derived significant regions. For schizophrenia, whitening improved rankings of key cortical and subcortical regions despite statistically insignificant overall correlations. Interpretability was assessed by comparing classifier-derived region importance with ENIGMA meta-analytic findings. Atlas differences limited statistical alignment with ENIGMA region lists, especially for schizophrenia.
