The existing HIV literature has limitations in sample size, control groups, biomarkers, and social functioning indicators. Only two prior studies linked social cognition to real-world social functioning in HIV. Most existing HIV social cognition studies focused on facial emotion recognition or perception. Prior structural neuroimaging in people with HIV has found inconsistent amygdala volume changes and more consistent reductions in temporo-parietal junction and medial prefrontal cortex volume. A review of 14 studies found subtle social cognitive deficits may be present in many people with HIV.
