False Sublime

False sublime outlets can provide escape or a feeling of belonging to something larger. The false sublime is a destructive or distorted expression of the need for transcendence. False sublime outlets redirect the deeper need into addiction, rage, avoidance, or collective hostility. The desire for transcendence may attach to unhealthy outlets when constructive forms are unavailable. Unconscious or unhealthy approaches to transcendence can lead to false substitutes.
