Free-weight resistance training is described as commonly used for chronic low back pain and targets strength, quality, and endurance. Free-weight training alternates between two session types. The programme replicates a previous 16-week protocol by Welch et al. Participants who cannot deadlift from the floor will use a raised bar at a height that permits a straight back. Participants will be filmed and coached because free weights require coordination and force control outside a fixed plane. The control intervention uses progressive free-weight resistance training.
