The HBP-AMRI protocol administers gadoxetic acid at 0.025 mmol/kg followed by a 20 mL saline flush. Gadoxetic acid is a liver-specific contrast agent taken up by functioning hepatocytes. Hepatocellular carcinomas appear hypointense on hepatobiliary-phase gadoxetic acid MRI because they lack normal hepatocyte transporter function. The HBP-AMRI protocol includes a 15–20 minute delay after gadoxetic acid administration for hepatobiliary uptake.
