Probiotics protect against bacterial environments that allow gastritis to develop or persist. Gastritis is a serious, usually chronic condition involving inflammation of the stomach lining that develops over years of accumulated insults. Gastritis means the mucosal lining is already compromised, so adding acid intensifies the problem. The mechanism of ACV-induced burning is the same for gastritis and ulcers: an already-damaged tissue surface exposed to an acidic substance. Apple cider vinegar and betaine HCl must not be introduced while the stomach lining is still inflamed, as they will worsen inflammation and pain. Chronic antacid use can itself cause gastritis by damaging the stomach lining. Chronic stress, poor sleep, and a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates contribute to gastritis.
