Geographic Distribution of Glaucoma

Western Sub-Saharan Africa carried the highest age-standardised burden of any GBD region, with an ASPR of 294.4 and ASDR of 32.5 per 100,000. Niger recorded the highest national age-standardised prevalence rate (345.65 per 100,000) and age-standardised DALY rate (41.83 per 100,000). India reported the highest national glaucoma case count (1,372,410) in 2021, followed by China (1,119,892). African nations bore the heaviest age-standardised glaucoma burden. Taiwan province of China had the lowest national ASPR (17.63 per 100,000) and ASDR (0.59 per 100,000). The Gambia, Benin, and Niger were notable exceptions showing significant increasing trends in ASPR and ASDR over the 30-year period, while most countries showed declines.
