During the pull, the thumb rotates from down to pointing backward at the top. An underhand grip should not be used for this variation. Each hand grips a cable handle at the start of the exercise. The hands should be placed in a fairly close or narrow grip. The starting grip uses a pronated thumb-down orientation. The exercise uses a pull-up station. The grip may use a thumbs-over-the-top position rather than wrapping the thumbs underneath the bar. The over-the-top thumb position is used while the bar remains supported at shoulder level before pressing.
